The mission of the National Federation of the Blind is to achieve widespread emotional acceptance and intellectual understanding that the real problem of blindness is not the loss of eyesight but the misconceptions and lack of information which exist. We do this by bringing blind people together to share successes, to support each other in times of failure, and to create imaginative solutions.

Negative attitudes about blindness are so prevalent in our world that it is not unusual for a blind child (even with the most supportive parents) to feel shame and resentment about his or her blindness. Children who have regular interaction with competent blind/visually impaired adults develop pride in themselves and in their adaptive skills. Parents are encouraged by observing adult blind mentors who live “normal” lives…going to work, raising children, shopping, cooking for their families, and traveling independently. Parents, you are not alone when it comes to helping your child build a positive self image. The Wisconsin Parents of Blind Children and the National Federation of the Blind are here for you!
